Today, the House Natural Resources Committee will markup the Republican budget reconciliation bill. Many of the directives in the bill contradict the priorities for nature, health, and community equity that the America the Beautiful for All Coalition champions.
Shantha Alonso, executive director of the America the Beautiful for All Coalition said:
"Instead of investing in improving our country’s ecological health, House Republicans are proposing to exploit our public lands and waters to raise around $15 billion in new revenue to help pay for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires. House Republicans have also proposed to allow companies to be able to pay to bypass legal accountability and input from community members shared through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.
"Special tax deals for multi-billion dollar extractive industries should never come before the safety of our communities and ecosystems.
"Rather than expanding drilling, logging, and mining, Congress should end taxpayer subsidies for a trillion dollar industry, close tax loopholes, and ensure corporations pay their fair share. These measures would truly address the deficit while safeguarding our public lands and waters as well as our ocean for future generations."
