Last Saturday, July 4, 2026, our country marked 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. The losses and erasures and heartbreaks and courageous actions of the many peoples that led to this moment were not forgotten by me and my colleagues.
So, before we make our ask, we first want to greet the people whose ancestors greeted the colonizers with gifts and curiosity, only to be greeted with commodification and betrayal and violence. The people whose ancestors were sold and bought from various ports. The many who toiled to build this country. The many peoples in between and after whose stories we have yet to uncover. The lands and waters and forests and animals that hold all of us. We see you. All of you.
Our coalition collaborates so that history does not repeat itself. So, this anniversary year, we are choosing to reflect and collectively imagine: what kind of country do we want to build for the next 250 years?
We believe that in the next 250 years, every person in America will breathe clean air, drink safe water, have access to safe outdoor spaces, and live in healthy communities we all call home.
